Ecstasy / Question
Published: June 13, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

What is Ecstasy?

Signed: What's E?

Dear What's E?,

Ecstasy is an illegal drug most commonly found in today's club scene. It is also known as XTC, X or E. The drug is relatively new and its complete effects on the brain and body are still being discovered.

Research does show that E is similar to amphetamines, and generally causes a heightened feeling of euphoria and caring for all. As great this may sound, E causes the body to unnaturally raise its temperature. This is especially dangerous under normal circumstance, but also because in situations where E is used like Raves, the room may already be quite hot. This temperature raise under normal circumstances leads to dehydration, enzyme degradation and a breakdown of other organs (made even worse at clubs, parties and Raves). In addition, there is new information that Ecstasy does cause changes in the brain that may not be reversible and cause memory loss.

For further more in-depth history and information regarding this drug check out Rollin' on XTC. If you are considering experimenting with Ecstasy, please don't.
