Marijuana / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,
I've been smoking weed for about a year and a half now and it's really been affecting my life lately. I have become so tolerant and mentally addicted that I've been smoking on average about six times a day. I need to get back into reality and I'm not quite sure how to pull myself away from this.

Dear Smoking Weed - Affecting My Life,
TeenHealthFX thinks it is great that you are aware of your behavior and have identified it as a concern. This is the first step in changing your behavior and "getting back into reality."
You mention being unsure of how to "pull yourself" away from this. It is important to realize that you may not be able to do this alone; in fact, you may need some professional assistance. But do not feel discouraged! There are numerous programs available specifically for teens. The first step, and often the hardest, is talking to your parents. They need to know the situation - not only to assist you in getting the proper help, but also to assist you in your recovery. If you are unable to speak with your parents initially, find another trusted adult. This can be a teacher or coach, a school guidance counselor or nurse, even your doctor or minister. Whoever, you choose to speak with, do so immediately.
There are some things you can do on your own, as well. Try identifying any triggers to your drug use. Do you use with a specific person or group of people? If so, limit your contact with that person/group of people. Do you use in a certain place/room? If so, avoid going to that place/room. These things may help break a sort of pattern you may have developed. Also, ask yourself when you use most often - mornings, late at night? If you find that you do have a vulnerable time, plan specific activities for this time or spend it with someone who does not use and who will not allow you to use either.
You may want to check out Marijuana Anonymous for some good information and resources within your area. The road to recovery is not easy. But you can stay clean! Getting support (from family and friends, as well as other addicts) is often the key. You do not have to do it alone.
