Suicide / Question
Published: December 22, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm 14, male, Caucasian, if that even matters, like my life... I'm consumed with shame, and I want to kill myself, no one cares about me, no one even bothers to ask 'whets wrong', a cant take any of life's she*t... I'd what to do no more, I already have scars on my arms from trying, and no1 gives a d*mn, my parent don't know nor shall they ever, some "friends" of mine I have told, and they just say "ya what ever do it I don't care" right now I'm listening to depressing music, wondering why my "friends" are so blessed, they get the perfect girl friend, everyone loves them, I'm just a reject that no one likes, I don't dress 'punk' or 'prep' or any of that, just Nike, Addidas and crap like that, normal crap, and I'm not accepted, I never was, and never will be, so I wonder why even bother living? I have nothing going for me, people tell me that I'm cute, but when they tell me that, they don't associate, my so called 'friends' get all the great people as partners, and I get the left overs! I'm second all in everything, I wish I could have one talent, but I don't, all I have is a 12' knife, and a computer. I have no reason to live, even my 'best friend' told me I was to depressed, and stopped associating with me. I need answers, I need answers or ill just kill myself, I don't care any more, to me death is just peace. I would like a free teen based internet talk line if you could find one, I have a card for the telephone ones, but my parents check the bill and stuff, so if you could find an internet based line, that would be much obliged.

Dear Depressed - Looking For Teen Internet Helpline,
TeenHealthFX understands that you have a lot going on in your life. It can be disappointing and upsetting if your friends do not take you seriously and when you do not think your parents understand what is going on with you. It sounds like you are dealing with depression at this time.
You say you do not have a talent, but having a specific talent is not necessary to enjoying life. Also, at 14, it is quite possible that you have not yet discovered what your talent will be. If you kill yourself, then you never get to find out what your potential really is.
Although it sounds like you do not think your parents will understand, we encourage you to tell them how badly you have been feeling and give them the opportunity to help you. Most parents want their children to be happy and healthy and do not want them to suffer - especially with feelings and issues that can be successfully addressed. If you tell your parents and they do not believe you or get you help, find another adult that you trust - like a teacher, a counselor or school nurse. You can also talk to your doctor. Your parents or other adult should be able to get you the professional help that you need.
A mental health professional, like a therapist or psychiatrist, can talk with you about feeling depressed and suicidal and can help you to figure out what is going on and what can be done to help you feel better. Sometimes it is talk therapy, sometimes medication and many times, it is a combination of both.
If you are seriously considering suicide or become afraid of your impulses, you should seek help immediately. Call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. In northern New Jersey call the crisis hotline at Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Outside this area call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline, 1-800-999-9999, 24 hours, 7 days a week. If you are outside the U.S., click on the Samaritans to find the number for your local Samaritans branch. You can also log onto Teens 411 for additional resources.
