Published: February 4, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I need your help - I was raped. I have not told anyone about it because I am ashamed! My vaginal area has been sore for 2 weeks now; please tell me what to do.

Dear Raped, Vaginal Area Sore, What Do I Do?,

We are so sorry that you were raped. TeenHealthFX wants you to know that you did nothing wrong and have nothing to be ashamed of. You were the victim of a sexual assault, which is a crime of violence against you. It is important that you get medical attention and also counseling as soon as possible.

We urge you to tell your parents what has happened to you so that they can give you the support and help you need and also get you medical help and counseling, too. There are many complicated emotions that can occur as the result of being sexually assaulted. Specially trained therapists can help you sort through your feelings and help you feel better. If you cannot confide in your parents, talk to another trusted adult like an aunt or your school nurse.

If you would like help finding a therapist, group or more information contact Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) at their website, or call 1-800-656-HOPE (4673), 24 hours, 7days a week.

Signed: TeenHealthFX
