Sexual Assault & Rape / Question
Published: June 18, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been seeing this guy for two months. I am very afraid of being abused again because I was abused and raped. He had to move to Illinois with his mom and I'm not sure what to do. I am very confused. He won't be back until July and I am beginning to wonder if I should break up with him until he comes home or just try and hold it together until then.

Dear Truly Confused,

Your questions sounds so similar to Boyfriend In Illinois that TeenHealthFX would not be surprised if you were the same person. What you went through is very traumatic and it takes time to heal. The only person you need to worry about is yourself. If you are apprehensive about a relationship, then pull back a little if you need to. Your partner will be understanding and supportive if he really cares about you.

If you are having a hard time coping you may want to seek counseling or join a support group with women who have been through a similar ordeal as yourself. Sometimes starting in individual therapy gets you comfortable talking about the rape. From there, you can always join a group for additional support. The main thing to remember is that you can regain control of your life and experience intimacy again.
