Bipolar Disorder & Extreme Moods / Question
Published: March 29, 2007

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I was sitting in my room, listening to music and my favorite song came on. So, I opened my mouth to start singing and words that I was not thinking at the time came out. I had never even put those words together to form this sentence. It said, "Let off life and die!" I was wondering if I should be checked out to see if I have a disorder of some sort. I mean, I do have a lot of "weird" things that happen to me. Like I will be happy one minute, and the next I'm upset for no reason at all. One minute I feel my family loves me and the next I feel they hate me and want me dead. If I should be checked out, where would I go? I live in Walker County, Georgia and I am a female and 18 years old.

Dear A Lot Of Wierd Things Happen to Me,

TeenHealthFX is unable to give any accurate diagnosis over the internet of what you are experiencing. However, if you are feeling like “weird” things have been happening to you and you are noticing frequent mood changes, FX does recommend that you meet with a mental health professional so that you can share your concerns. A mental health professional would be able to assess if you do have any type of mental disorder, as well as formulate a treatment plan with you in the event that you did.

For mental health services in Walker County, you can contact the Lookout Mountain Community Service Board at 800-882-1552. You could also ask your physician for mental health referrals. In addition, many of the national mental health organizations like the National Mental Health Association and SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) offer facility and provider locators through their Web sites as well.
