Eating Disorders / Question
Published: December 18, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I've recently had an eating disorder. I've realized that by not eating, I was harming my body. I want to get back on track, but I do not want to gain back the weight. I've not been able to digest properly and go to the bathroom on a regular basis after eating a meal. What can I do?

Dear Want To Get Back On Track After Eating Disorder,
We are glad to hear that you are getting back on track. The process of recovering from an eating disorder can be a long and difficult one
You have not mentioned how much you weigh, but if you have gone through a period of not eating and are too thin, part of recovering from your eating disorder is to gain enough so that your body reaches a normal, healthy weight. We can tell this feels difficult to you, and you also mention that you are suffering from some physical symptoms. It sounds like both your mind and your body are still in the process of recovery.
We suggest you get some support. Try talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you have been going through and what you can do to get well. Ultimately, we suggest you get counseling. Eating disorders are rarely just about body issues. They usually indicate that a person is grappling with underlying issues, like not feeling happy with yourself or feeling depressed about some aspects of your life. Talking to a therapist may help you work these issues out, and also help you develop a more healthy relationship with food and with your body. It's also important to see a medical doctor since eating disorders involve a number of medical risks, and since you've experienced physical problems. Please let your parent know that you would like to schedule a visit with your doctor. If you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Eating Disorder Program of Atlantic Health System at 908.522.5757 for an appointment (for counseling and medical issues).
