Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi, TeenHealthFX! I'm a 15 year old female, my birthday is on November. I'll be sixteen by then. But I'm only about 5'2 tall!! (I'm 98 pounds)I don't really feel good about that, and telling me that I should learn how to look it up as a positive thing isn't gonna work either... I just want to be taller without using any pills! Can I still do something about it? Like exercise or something that I should eat or do? Please help me!! Thanks in advance!!

Dear Do Not Feel Good About My Height,
TeenHealthFX understands your desire to be taller, and while you do not have complete control over your height, things like diet and exercise can help to ensure that you do not stunt your growth in anyway. It is important that you get a sufficient amount of calcium everyday. How exactly does calcium help you build strong bones? To lengthen long bones during growth, the body builds a scaffold of protein and fills this in with calcium-rich mineral. From the time you're 11 until you're 24, you need about 1,300 milligrams (mg) of calcium each day to get the job done. That means at least 4.5 serving of milk, cheese or yogurt daily. Adolescent bodies have a higher capacity to absorb and retain calcium, making them especially efficient at bone building. In addition to the calcium, it is important that you eat a healthy diet, including servings of fruit, vegetables, protein, and wholegrain. Also, try to exercise 3 to 4 times per week and your body will take care of itself.
According to your BMI score (see Appropriate Height and Weight) you are slightly underweight for your height. You may want to see your doctor or a nutritionist to discuss your nutrition and weight.
If you don't have a doctor and live in northern
FX would also like to point out that for the most part our height is genetically pre-determined and out of our control. It is therefore important for you not to dwell on things that are not very changeable (like height) and to focus instead on your positive qualities and traits.
