ADD/ADHD / Question
Published: January 9, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 17 years old. I know I have ADD because I do stupid stuff to get attention and can't really concentrate in class very well, also I am very lacadazical. My mother doesn't think I have it so I can't get tested to be sure and my Dad is a very strict person and would get upset if I asked him. How can I get tested without them knowing and if it comes up that I do have it, how can I get a prescription without them knowing? Thanks.

Dear ADD Prescription,
You must feel very alone, but there is help out there. Whether you are suffering from ADD or not, you can learn to manage these behaviors better. Check out TeenHealthFX's response to Do I Have ADD? This is a very similar question to yours and may help you to understand ADD a little more.
If after reading it, you still think that you may have ADD, you will need to talk to a trusted adult about what is going on. If you do not think that your parents will listen, try a teacher, coach or counselor. Counselors at school are usually good at helping parents and students to understand what ADD is all about and the different ways students with ADD can be helped. ADD is not something that would typically be evaluated and treated without a parent's knowledge. With support and guidance from your school you can hopefully get the help that you need to start to feel better.
If you live in Northern New Jersey and would like to make an appointment to see a doctor, you can call the Adolescent young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475.
