Depression / Question
Published: September 28, 2006

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I think I am depressed and have used your symptom check list and checked mostly everything but I cant bring myself to talk to my mum because I'm very shy and I often don’t talk about my emotions, I feel guilty because I should trust them but I just cant, I thought that it would just go away and I forgot about it for a while, but since the summer holidays I've started to feel more depressed but I don’t know what its about please help.

Last of all I would like to thank you for all of your help with previous problems and hope you keep up the good work.

Dear Depressed But Scared To Talk To My Mom About It,

Talking about feelings can be extremely difficult for some people, so FX can appreciate that it might feel tough for you to think about initiating a conversation with your mother about feeling depressed. So try not to feel too down on yourself or feel too guilty about how hard this is feeling for you – it is understandable and you are certainly not the only person who feels hesitant in reaching out to others for help with emotional issues.

The best FX can say is to trust your gut that your mother will be understanding and simply tell her. You could even start out the conversation by explaining to her what you need to talk to her about is very difficult for you, or you can even show her this question and answer or the symptoms checklist as a way to initiate things. It might feel scary, but FX suggests you just go for it – that way you can be on your way to getting the help you need for your depression, and you will not have this worry about talking to her hanging over your head any more.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
