Stress / Question
Published: January 15, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have a question dealing with school. I can't stand my high school and I asked my parents to switch me, the closest high school is an Alternative high school and I really can't stand staying in a public high school. I have anxiety attacks.

Dear Can't Stand My High School,
TeenHealthFX is wondering what is going on at school? Is there something or someone preventing you from enjoying school? Is it the school itself, the workload or your peers that is causing you such distress? TeenHealthFX is very concerned about you and believes that high school years are a very important time in a your life. It can be an exciting time, filled with challenging experiences that will help you grow and mature.
A change of environment may be beneficial but you may have to face new challenges and stress. TeenHealthFX strongly urges you to talk with your parents so that you can truly decide if switching schools is necessary.
You also mention that you have anxiety attacks. It is natural to have anxiety in your life. School, work and family are all sources of anxiety and most of us have ways to deal with it. You do not mention much about your anxiety attacks, but if they are interfering with your life, you should see a doctor. Transferring to a new school may have some benefits but it is doubtful that it will relieve your anxiety attacks. This issue needs to be addressed regardless of which school you attend.
If you live in northern New Jersey and would like to be assessed for an Anxiety Disorder you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888.247.1400 for an appointment. Those outside this area can check the National Mental Health Association's website for a list of resources.
