Worries, Fears and Anxiety Disorders / Question
Published: February 18, 2009

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Sometimes when I'm at school, or maybe just the grocery store, I suddenly get the feeling that I "can't take it anymore." My heart starts racing, I breathe quickly, and my chest and shoulders rise up. This problem is starting to get embarrassing, especially when I have to leave. It usually gets better once I've left the area. Do you have any advice?

Dear Sometimes I Feel Like I Can't Take It Anymore,

TeenHealthFX suggests that you speak to a medical health professional to rule out any underlying medical problems that might be contributing to your physical symptoms. If your doctor finds there is no medical issue (which is very possible since your symptoms seem very situation specific), then meet with a mental health professional to see whether or not you are dealing with some kind of anxiety disorder. People with certain anxiety disorders often find that their anxiety builds when in certain situations – such as being n crowded areas like school or a grocery store. The anxiety can heighten to the point where physical symptoms occur, such as increased rate and faster breathing. If you are dealing with an anxiety disorder, there are techniques that can be learned in therapy to lessen anxiety and the related symptoms, as well as the possibility of medication management with anti-anxiety medications. So seek help as soon as possible, as FX can appreciate that these experiences are probably getting more and more difficult for you to tolerate.
