Self-Confidence & Self-Esteem Issues / Question
Published: March 9, 2009

Dear TeenHealthFX,

i've always been afraid of being physically rejected by guys because i'm an ugly girl. now, i was with a guy, not in public, and he kissed me! he was touching my body and he had an erection! i thought that wouldn't happen because i'm ugly! is that normal? would a guy get turned on if you're ugly? do turned on an erection equal the same thing? i don't think so but i'm confused.

Dear Think I'm Ugly - Can A Guy Get Turned On With Me?,

To answer your question about what arouses men, it will be different for different men. Men tend to be more sexually stimulated visually than women – but what that visual will be will differ from person to person. Even though you see yourself as “ugly,” there will definitely be men out there who will look at you and see you as beautiful and attractive person, and will be turned on by you.

FX is not at all surprised that you found someone who finds you attractive and wants to kiss you. But we are concerned that your view of yourself is as being “ugly.” FX thinks that it is important for you to focus on your physical features that you like, to remember that part of what makes a person attractive is personality and confidence, and to keep in mind that you are most likely being a tougher critic of yourself than others are. It might be helpful for you to speak to your parents, a school counselor, private therapist or any other trusted adult about how you are feeling. FX thinks that it would be good for you to have some support and guidance as you find ways to feel better about yourself.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area. You can also contact your insurance company to get a list of in-network mental health providers or check with your school social worker or psychologist to get a list of referrals in your area.
