Worries, Fears and Anxiety Disorders / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm a four-teen year old female and I'm having a few issues sleeping. I have done everything on the "for teens by teens" list to help me sleep exept turning off my lights computer. I MUST have my closet light on and a video playing on my computer or have get the over-whelming feeling of dread. Even with them on I feel so scared like some ones "gonna get me". I haven't the slightest idea why I feel this way. I avoid stupid unintelligant horror movies at all costs so that can't be contributing can it? Might I have paranoia? Even noe it's 12:38. Your site is very helpful and I thank you for all the past times you've helped me. ~sleepless in chicago

Since you are describing feelings of “dread” and state that at times you feel “scared” that someone is going to “get” you at night, then it sounds to TeenHealthFX that emotions rather than a underlying medical issue are the main contributing factors to your sleep issues. That said, FX thinks that it is important for you to have a consultation with a mental health professional. A therapist can determine whether or not there is some anxiety disorder that needs to be addressed and can work with you one-to-one on techniques that will help you to sleep better given the specific issues you have around sleep. A therapist can also work with you to determine whether there are current stressors in your life that contribute to these feelings of dread that also need to be addressed.
