Depression / Question
Published: July 9, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi-my name is XXXX and I'm 15 years old. Lately, I have been feeling very depressed and worthless because 2 of my best friends just killed themselves. A couple days ago, I started cutting myself with my razor and I can't stop. My mom saw my bandages on my arm but I just old her I ran into my locker at school (she believed me). Also, about a week ago I decided to tell my friend about all this, and now she knows about the cutting part too. She is threatening to tell my parents if I don't, but my parents and I are not close at all. Do you think there is any way that I can get help w/o my parents knowing? Thanx soo much.

Dear Feeling Depressed and Worthless,
TeenHealthFX is sorry for your loss and knows that this is an extremely difficult and painful time for you. Losing a close friend through suicide is especially painful and it would helpful to you to see a therapist or psychologist who can help you deal with your pain and grief. The wealth of emotions you are feeling are hard to sort with by yourself.
Your feelings of depression and cutting cannot be handled alone - telling your friend was a good decision and she is right to want to tell your parents. Your friend is looking out for you and does not want to see you in this pain. Although you may not feel that you are close to your parents, they care very deeply for you. You will need their support and guidance in order to help you work through your emotions.
TeenHealthFX recommends that you talk to your parents and let them know how you are feeling. Also tell them about your cutting. With the loss of your two friends they understand that this is a difficult time for you and will want to help you cope with your emotions. They can help you get the professional support that you need.
You can find a therapist by asking for a referral from your doctor. Or, if you live in a northern New Jersey you can contact the Access Center From Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400 to find a therapist. If you live outside of this area you can log onto US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
