Cutting / Question
Published: May 7, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I've been cutting myself since I was about 11 and it's been really bad recently. I told someone and now I feel really guilty for making them worry so I'm doing it even more. I don't even know why I do it and I don't even know how it started. Please help in case I kill myself by accident or something.

Dear Cutting Myself Since 11YO,

TeenHealthFX is concerned about you and understands that you must be going through a real difficult time. You need to get help from a professional ASAP. Cutting yourself is a serious sign that something is wrong. This behavior indicates problems such as extreme stress and depression. This cannot be ignored. Some people cut to battle the feeling of numbness, depression, or to relieve stress. While cutting may seem like it provides some relief, there are many other ways that can provide healthy long-term relief of these symptoms.

Please, find help. FX is glad that you told someone, but we are unsure if this person is going to assist you. You may need to tell someone else like a trusted adult: your parents, a teacher or a guidance counselor. FX knows from your question that this makes you feel guilty, but you must tell an adult to get assistance. A trusted adult can get you involved with a counselor who can help you start to work through your issues..

Sometimes people who cut become so desperate and depressed that they begin to think of suicide. If you are in immediate danger (from cutting) or contemplating suicide you need to get help. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency service, or in northern NJ, call the Atlantic Health System's Crisis Hotline at (973) 540-0100.

Get help today.
