Eating Disorders / Question
Published: May 7, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I recently found out that I have an eating disorder. Before, I was 5'6 and 109 lbs. I know that I have to gain weight and I want to but at the same time, I'm afraid to. After seeing some doctors, I'm starting to get back on track and now I'm 113 lbs. I realized that the physical part of it is much easier to get over than the mental aspect. Now, I'm always thinking about food and trying to keep myself busy isn't working. Lately, I've been so angry and my parents have been such a huge help but this is something I have to get over on my own. What can I do to get over this?

Dear How To Get Over An Eating Disorder?,
It sounds as though you have taken a courageous step in getting your eating disorder under control and are on the right track to healthier living. FX is glad to hear that you are under doctor's care for the medical aspect of your disorder, but as you mentioned, getting over the mental aspect of an eating disorder can be difficult.
Eating disorders are primarily psychological and nature. Usually, when someone has an eating disorder, there is something else bothering him or her. It may be low self-esteem or depression, but the person uses food as a way to try to gain control of their life (see Coping with Anorexic Friend).
FX encourages you to talk to your parents about getting counseling. A professional with experience in eating disorders can help you get to the root of the problem and give you better footing as you continue your quest for healthier living.
If you live in northern New Jersey, you can get help at the Eating Disorders Program at Atlantic Health System at (908) 522.5757.
