Cutting / Question
Published: May 15, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have written you before about my best friend who cuts herself, I totally understand what she's going through, but I have recently stopped, and am trying to do more activities with my friends. I am really concerened about her though, I haven't be able to see her in 2 months. Her parents think I am a bad influence. She hates her pshycologist. And her parents grounded her for cutting herself. But, we write letters back and forth. A recent letter I recieved said this: "I've been so depressed lately...Please write me back." Is there anyway I can help her?

Dear Parents Grounded For Cutting,

TeenHealthFX applauds you for your efforts at recovery and for being concerned about your friend. Out of respect for your friend's privacy, we won't publish the contents of her letter.

Even though you are concerned, it is your friend's responsibility to try and get well. You can be there for her to support her but she has to do the hard work herself. It is positive that she is in therapy - if she does hate her therapist, then perhaps she can try another one. If you think she may harm herself, you need to tell a responsible adult - her parents, a teacher, school nurse or counselor. If you think she is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.

You can also give your friend this website that might help her: Self Abuse Finally Ends.
