Cutting / Question
Published: May 29, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been cutting myself, I've done it too many times and I do it way too deep. I've also abused many drugs and tried to stop. When people see the cuts they talk about me, and I feel so rejected and I cut myself again. I told my parents and they only screamed at me and told me if I cut myself again that they would do it 10 times as worse, so I don't tell them when I do it anymore. I asked them if they could get me help, but they refused to get it for me. I'm scared to talk to school teachers because they could kick me out of school and I don't want that. I'm scared of what I'll do next. I get depressed and it goes deeper and I can't think straight, so I get worse every time. Please help me.

Dear Parents Screamed About Cutting,

TeenHealthFX wants you to know that there is help out there for you, but you need to talk to someone.  You can ask your parents for help again, but if that does not work, talk to someone you trust at school about how bad you are feeling - schools do not kick out students who are experiencing emotional distress - they try to get them the help that they need.  A teacher, school nurse or counselor can refer you to a professional therapist and talk to your parents about what you are experiencing.

Many teens cut and feel depressed.  For information on cutting you can check out the S.A.F.E (Self Abuse Finally Ends) website.
