Anger / Question
Published: July 17, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I use my anger when I jog or lift weights. When someone makes me angry, I kind of push it down and store it until I work out. That coupled with rock music helps me push myself harder and do better. My mother told me that this was not healthy. I guess I just wanted a professional opinion.

Dear Use My Anger When I Jog or Weight Lift,

Physical exercise is an excellent way to reduce stress and anger. The problem is that you are storing your anger and only releasing it, in this one particular way. It generally is not a good idea to stuff your anger because there is a greater likelihood that the anger may overflow before you get a chance to work out. Exercise should be part of the grand plan when it comes to reducing anger. Talking, relaxation exercises and doing something creative are also good ways to relieve anger and stress. The main thing is that you do not let anger build up, because if you do "blow a fuse", all the anger will come poring out and there is a chance you may do or say something that you regret later.

Not releasing anger appropriately can lead to many physical problems including high blood pressure and depression. It can also lead to poor relationship development if you do not know how to appropriately resolve your differences with people.
