Family Abuse And Violence / Question
Published: July 17, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I get yelled at by my parents and brothers a lot. They verbally/mentally abuse me they call me things like stupid, idiot, bitch, fat, cunt, carpet muncher, faggot, lesbo, Fuc*ing retard, dumb, as*hole, they tell me they hate me that I should have never been born, and a lot of other stuff. They don't hit me, they used to but they stopped because I got older and I know how horrible of a person I am without the hitting, but I'm 17 I'll be 18 in about 4 months this has been going on for years is it too late to tell someone like social services?

Dear In Pain At Home,
No, it is not too late to tell child protective services. You are describing an abusive situation and should not have to tolerate it. TeenHealthFX is concerned about you - even though your parents and brothers treat you badly this does not make you a horrible person. The responsibility for the abuse rests solely on your parents - it is not your fault. Nothing gives your parents (or anyone, for that matter) to treat you so poorly. You do not say how old your brother is, however, his behavior is not okay either.
You can make the call to child protective services yourself or talk to a trusted adult such as a teacher, school counselor or school nurse - even your doctor. They will keep your discussion confidential but they are required (by law) to report potential abuse to child protective services. If you live in northern New Jersey, the agency is called the Division of Youth and Family Services and their number is 800.792.8610. If you live outside of this area you can also log onto ChildHelp USA for the number to call in your community.
Once a report has been filed, an investigation will occur and if there is abuse in your home, you and your siblings will be removed from the home and counseling to deal with the abuse will be provided for all individuals involved. These professionals are there to help you and ensure that you are not in danger and that you get the help that you and your family need.Signed: TeenHealthFX
