Depression / Question
Published: September 22, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have been depressed for about 4 years already. I'm not sure if I'm suffering from depression the disorder, but I do think about suicide a lot. I've always been able to stop myself before doing anything, like by smoking or listening to music, which makes me feel better. My problem is my family doesn't have a lot of money so we can't afford therapy or any pills. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to stop this for free. If you know of any way please respond.

Dear Is There Free Help For Depression?,
Four years is a long time to be suffering and feeling suicidal. Depression is a very treatable illness. TeenHealthFX is glad that you are reaching out for help.
There is help available even if you do not have a lot of money. One or both of your parents may have insurance that would cover the cost of therapy. If they do not there are clinics and hospital-based programs that provide services based on your ability to pay.
If you get to the point that you are seriously considering suicide or are afraid of your impulses then you need to seek help immediately. You can call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room. In northern New Jersey you can also call the crisis hotline from Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Outside this area call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline, 1-800-999-9999, 24 hours, 7 days a week.
If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
