Volunteering Opportunities And Extra-Curricular Activities / Question
Published: February 18, 2008
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I want to make a difference in this world. I've seen kids who start charities, I know that the boy who created aids.org was just a teenager; some kids write novels, they start clubs etc. I want to know, how can I do this? How can I be known for making a difference in the world? I want to teach others, teach those that can't learn about new things. I am only in grade 10, I am planning to volunteer in a hospital this summer, as well as take an english course in summer school. I also want an internship to a magazine, my average is 95, and I want to be an OB/GYN. I have a lot of thoughts for the future, but I just don't know where to start off. I don't know how to begin to make a difference.

Dear Want To Make A Difference,
The people who have made big differences in their communities, states, countries, or even in the world, have started off by working at something they feel incredibly passionate about. FX suggests that you start by focusing on one or two things that you feel particularly interested in right now. Whether it is teaching, helping the homeless, animal rights, working with the elderly, or any other worthwhile cause that comes to mind – think about joining an existing organization or starting your own through your school with the help of your principal or a faculty advisor.
There is a lot out there that needs to be done, and it takes the drive and passion from people like you. So decide what your main passion is right now, find an adult around you to provide you with some support and guidance as you go about this, and continue to enjoy the wonderful feelings you get from knowing you are making a difference.
In addition to talking to some adults around you, consider checking out some of these websites, which help teens and families to discover what volunteer organizations are best suited for them:
