Feces, Poop & Butt Issues / Question
Published: July 15, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
OK, I'm starting to worry now. I'm a 19-year-old male and have notice that for the past 3 weeks or so I have been having blood in my stool. It is bright red looking and I see it when I wipe as well. I've heard it can be cancer. This worries me. I haven't had any unusually hard times with bowel movements. I thought it would just stop and go away. It's happened before for like 1 or 2 days in a row and then stop, but this has been going on for weeks now. I figure I should see a doctor but am embarrassed. I guess my question is, could you tell me what kinds of things they are going to test and how they will be tested when I go get this checked out?

Dear Blood In Stool, What Kinds Of Tests Will They Do?,
There are many causes for blood in the stool, some more serious than others. One possibility is hemorrhoids, which are relatively easy to treat.
We understand that this problem may feel embarrassing, but we are glad you are planning to see a doctor so you can find out what is wrong and treat it. Doctors are specially trained to deal with conditions or problems that may seem embarrassing. They also keep information confidential, and will work hard to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible during an examination. The doctor most likely will perform a full physical examination including a rectal exam. The doctor wears a lubricated glove to perform this exam. This may be necessary to determine where the bleeding is from. Further tests will depend on the doctor's assessment of your symptoms. We encourage you to talk openly with your doctor - you have the right to get answers to any questions you ask, and to feel comfortable with whatever examinations are done.
If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, contact your local adolescent health center or clinic.
