Published: April 17, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Im 19 years old and for about a year now I have been having severe pains in my chest. It feels as if my something is trying to squeeze its way through something in my chest. My left arm goes numb and the tightness in my chest gets worse, my back and left shoulder goes numb as if they are asleep. after about 30 mins it goes away but it scares me and my boyfriend. Should i go to the doctor? what could it be?

Dear 19 Y.O. With Severe Chest Pains,

TeenHealthFX understands why the symptoms you describe can be troublesome, however we are unable to make an accurate diagnosis over the internet. We recommend you make an appointment to see a doctor immediately. If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic. If the chest pain recurs before you have seen a doctor, we recommend you go to your local hospital emergency room.
