Hairy Situations: Too Much, Too Little & Shaving / Question
Published: July 6, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

For a teen guy, what is the best way to remove unwanted hair (i.e. Shoulder, nub of your back) Shaving will leave stubs, and since I'm not a girl I don't know much about waxing. Thanks!

Dear Guys Unwanted Hair,

Most women will tell you removing unwanted hair could be time consuming and a pain in every sense of the word. However, unlike woman, there is not nearly as much societal pressure for men to get rid of unwanted hair. In fact some women consider a hairy man to be very attractive.

Including shaving, waxing, electrolysis and hair removal creams, there are several options:

  • Waxing - If you are interested in waxing, TeenHealthFX recommends that you go to a salon that does waxing. Because wax is hot, this would help you to avoid injury. Electrolysis works by destroying the hair follicles with an electric current. It is very expensive and time consuming.
  • Electrolysis - This is generally not recommended for large areas of hair growth such as your back.
  • Creams and Lotions - Hair removal lotions or creams cause the exposed hair to disintegrate. The root is left intact, and will grow back. With this method you run the risk of skin irritation because some of these chemicals are abrasive.

Except for electrolysis, none of these methods will remove hair permanently. Depending on how fast your hair grows; you could have to repeat the procedure every few days. For those hard to reach areas such as your back you may also need an extra set of hands.

We recommend that you discuss your unwanted hair with your doctor before you try any of these methods, he/she can advise you on the best method.
