The West Nile Virus is a new virus to the United States and was first detected in 1999. The virus is carried by infected mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites you, a bird or animal it can transmit the virus. Most people who come in contact with the virus experience no symptoms. The symptoms of West Nile are flu-like (headaches, fever and body aches). However, West Nile may lead to Encephalitis in certain people. This is a serious condition characterized by high fever, stiff neck, confusion, severe headaches, loss of consciousness, muscle weakness and paralysis. This condition is more common in the elderly and leads to the swelling and inflammation of the brain.
If you or someone you know suspects West Nile you should see your doctor. He or she can perform a blood test and give you proper care. Most people who contract West Nile do not develop encephalitis. If the virus multiplies in the blood stream and travels to the brain encephalitis occurs. In these extreme cases the person is hospitalized and given specific care.
