Stretch Marks And Such / Question
Published: July 30, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 15 years old and weigh 310 lbs. 99.99 of my fat is in my stomach. I am in the process of trying to lose weight but I am curious if the stretch marks on my stomach will go away. Do you have any suggestions on creams or something else?

Dear Stretch Marks From Fat,

TeenHealthFX applauds your effort to become healthier and wishes you much success in your weight loss. We do recommend that you do not do a fad weight loss program, but eat healthy and exercise to lose your unwanted pounds. The best way to start a program like this is to see your doctor and a nutritionist.

Stretch marks can fade over time, changing from a deep red, thick squiggle to a thin white line. There is nothing that will make them disappear altogether. Some over the counter products will help rejuvenate the skin and make the marks less noticeable. Once you have lost your targeted weight you can also consult with a dermatologist (skin doctor). There are prescription medications that can help. Laser surgery has proven to be very effective and is another option you can consider with your doctor.

Please do not let your fear of stretch marks interfere with your goal of losing weight. Aside from looking better, a healthier weight will give you more energy and make your heart work more efficiently.
