Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have big pores on my nose and cheeks and I was wondering what I could do to make them look smaller. Thanks

Dear Big Pores,

To some degree, pore size is genetically determined which means there is only so much you can do. They can appear to be large, especially if they have become clogged. The most important thing that you can do to keep your skin healthy is keep it clean. You should very gently wash your face multiple times during the day - once when you first get up, right before going to bed and then any other time during the day that your face might feel oily or dirty. Do not use strong abrasive scrubbers or rub at your face when washing. This will only aggravate your pores and may give your skin a breakout.

You can try using a pore reducing wash, or pore refining lotion after washing. There are many different brands to choose from. They will help to properly clean out pores and keep them at their minimum size. These products often promise dramatic results, but you cannot actually shrink your pore size, just minimize the way they look.

If your skin continues to concern you, you may consider seeing a dermatologist to better evaluate and treat you.
