Pee & Urine Issues - Pain, Bed-Wetting, Amount & Frequency / Question
Published: May 2, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hey, I am 15 and I have been going to the bathroom too much since I was 8. I usually go about 12 times a day and I heard it might be because I drink caffeine a lot, but all my friends do and they don't go to the bathroom as much as me. It is not just caffeine that makes it happen. It is really annoying. I always worry about where I'll be, if there is a bathroom, if I should drink something or not. It is like when I drink something I know where it is in my body sort of and I can't relax until I pee it all out. It is really annoying and I have done some research and I may have a urinary tract infection. Well I wanted to ask my doctor, but I figured they would say not to drink soda or something and I know that is not it. I've had this problem since I was 8. Please help.

Dear Peeing Machine,
Caffeine is considered a diuretic (makes you pee) and probably contributes to your problem but may not be causing it. You should give your doctor a chance to help you with this problem. If you tell him/her how much it has been bothering you then he/she will be more then willing to help you resolve it. Your doctor may decide to order some laboratory tests such as blood tests and check your urine to see if there is a medical reason for excessive urination. If you are drinking too much caffeinated soda or other beverages, part of the solution will be for you to cut back. If there is a medical reason for your predicament then the doctor will be able to diagnose it and treat it. Also, stress and anxiety can cause increased urinary frequency - perhaps you are focusing or worrying about peeing. This may be worsening the problem.
The main thing is to see your doctor first. No matter what the situation is your doctor will be able to advise you on what to do next. If you would like to meet with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey you can call 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
