Other Skin Conditions: Moles, Birthmarks, Dryness, Etc. / Question
Published: January 26, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Over the last couple of weeks during gym I have been doing square dancing and the teacher makes us take off our shoes and now ever since on the balls of my feet I have these blisters. I have only one on my right foot and now I have 2 on my left foot. They hurt to walk on and they are under my skin. My mom tried to open the one on my right foot and it won't open and I was wondering if I have a disease or if I should see my doctor or what to do. The two on my left foot just appeared today. I don't know if you'll answer my question but it doesn't matter. Thank-you.

Dear Blisters From Square Dancing,

The blisters on your feet seem to be "friction blisters" caused by friction between the skin and the surface it is in contact with. This causes rubbing off of the skin over the involved area, which becomes red and inflamed and eventually forms a blister.

You should not try to open blisters or sores yourself or let anyone else open them.  This can lead to infection or other complications.  If you have already opened the blisters then try applying an antibiotic cream and then apply a bandage. Also wearing comfortable shoes is will help.

The complication of the blisters could be localized infection with crust formation known as "impetigo" or spread of the infection through the blood stream in which case a systemic antibiotic will be needed.

If the blisters are still troubling you, then TeenHealthFX suggests you get them checked out by a doctor. If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475 for an appointment. If you live outside of this area, contact your local adolescent health center.
