Parasitic Diseases / Question
Published: February 5, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been concerned about a little problem in my bowel movement that I have noticed in the last month or two. Let me apologize if I gross out some. Ok my problem is that I have noticed worms in my bowel movement. I have done a little research a head of time, and I think that they are called pinworms. They are these little white things usually found after I have a bowel movement or on the tissue after wiping. Now I believe I have all the symptoms as well. The worms are suppose to cause rectal itching and discomfort and that seems to be the case in my situation. I also get a mucus-liquid substance associated with the worms. I was wondering what to do about the problem and if it is possible to get rid of these worm things. I really don't feel comfortable talking about this with anyone, my folks don't know. I have noticed them for a while and just thought that I healthy, but it wasn't until I looked up what they were that I became concerned. I hope you can Help me.

Dear Teen In Canada With Pinworms,

TeenHealthFX thinks what you are describing is a very common presentation of Pinworm infection.

A pinworm is a white, very thin worm about 1/4 inch long that moves. If it doesn't wiggle, it's probably lint or a thread. Pinworms usually are seen in the anal and buttock area, especially at night or early in the morning. Sometimes pinworms are found on the surface of a bowel movement. It is a very common infection in school age children and adolescents. They do not cause any serious health problems. However, they can cause much itching and irritation of the anal area and buttocks.

You should make an appointment to see your doctor.

To help your doctor make the diagnosis, look for these signs:

Your doctor can prescribe medication to get rid of Pinworms, it is easy to treat.

Good hygiene is recommended to prevent re-infection. Get into the habit of carefully washing your hands after using the toilet, and before and after eating. Thoroughly launder all bedding, clothing, and toys to destroy any lingering eggs. Launder all bedding every 3-7 days for 3 weeks. Also, wash your underwear and pajamas daily for 2 weeks.
