Published: February 13, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is it normal to have hair on your ears and a little on your nose? I am a 15 yr. old male. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of the hair on the nose and some on the ear? Its not a lot but enough to bother me. What about Epil-Stop Plus? Is it harmful

Dear Hair on Ears,

It is completely normal to have hair on your ears and even on and in your nose. It should be fine, much like the fuzz on a peach. This is the thin layer of hair that our body uses to protect itself, and is usually not noticeable, but everyone has different amounts and can sometimes see it more. People always notice things on their own body more critically than on others. If this hair bothers you or makes you feel uncomfortable there are a few things that you can do to get rid of the hair, but they are not permanent and will require regular upkeep. There are a lot of products on the market that are used for hair removal. The first that can be used on these small sensitive areas is waxing. You can get it done professional for a minimal charge. It may be dangerous to try on your own because the wax is incredibly hot and can cause burns. The other methods of hair removal can be more costly.

Epil-Stop is a depilatory, meaning instead of removing the hair it break apart the fibers of the hair and makes it dissolves above the surface of the skin. It only lasts for about six weeks and then the procedure must be repeated. It now comes in a spray form which is easier and less painful than waxing. It is costly about $30 a bottle. FX encourages you to first consult a dermatologist before using any of these products especially on the face and neck region as the skin around these areas is very sensitive and may become irritated.
