Feces, Poop & Butt Issues / Question
Published: February 23, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend has had blood in his stool about three times over 12 months. The blood is not free flowing in the toilet, discoloring the water. However, it appears less bright red and within the stool itself. He eats a lot of fiber everyday, a vegetarian, eats a lot of broccoli & cauliflower. What does blood in stool mean? What are the causes? Thanks.

Dear Boyfriend Has Blood In Stool,
TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose the cause of the bleeding, but we can tell you that bloody stool or any bloody discharge from the rectum is not normal and needs to be discussed with a medical professional. There are many causes for blood appearing in the stool, the toilet, or on toilet paper, some of which are serious, and others, which are more minor. However, only a doctor can determine the cause and severity.
Bleeding can be caused by trauma to the rectum or the onset of illness. Some specific causes of blood in the stool or from the rectum include hemorrhoids, a tear in the fragile tissues of the rectum, internal bleeding, and can also be seen in people who have precancerous polyps. Eating a diet high in fiber is a good idea, because it may help in the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. It also helps to make you have regular bowel movements. If he has a doctor, encourage him to make an appointment, if he lives in northern NJ and needs a doctor, he can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475.
