Stomach Issues & Nausea / Question
Published: April 27, 2009

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Lately, I've had random times in the day when I feel very nauseous. It usually happens during a meal time and I feel so sick that the thought of food makes me feel like I will throw up. It also happens at other times that I don't understand. I often have to skip meals because I feel so sick. I am a 15 year old girl. What could possibly be the cause of this and how do I get it to stop?

Dear Constantly Feel Nauseous,

Since it sounds like you have been nauseous for some time, TeenHealthFX recommends that you visit your doctor as soon as possible. We cannot give you any kind of accurate diagnosis over the internet as to why you have been feeling so nauseous – but if a person has been feeling very nauseous and/or has been vomiting for over a 48-72 hour time period, then it is very important to seek medical care immediately.

Constant nausea can be caused by many things, such as food poisoning, a reaction to certain medications, alcohol or drug abuse, pregnancy, gastritis, heat exhaustion, certain anxiety disorders, allergies, and more. There are so many possibilities that without a full medical exam, complete assessment of your symptoms, and an understanding your medical history, it would be nearly impossible to know the correct cause of how you have been feeling.

Again, please see your primary care physician or an adolescent medicine specialist right away. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
