Dear TeenHealthFX,
My mom is hesitant about letting me shave. What can I tell her to reassure her that shaving is okay and somewhat beneficial?

Dear Talking To Mom About Shaving,
TeenHealthFX is unsure if you are a male or a female, but the answer is the same for both. Shaving is a completely cultural idea and it is a very widely believed tradition in the American society. It is not seen as a medically necessary thing to do; however, culturally it is the norm (something most people believe in and do).
TeenHealthFX often hears questions like yours regarding getting their parents approval for shaving and can see why it is important to you. Most of your friends have probably started shaving and you may see yourself as being the only one who has not. Also, you may feel that you need to shave because of excessive hair growth. Both are fine reasons to start shaving if this is something you want to do.
TeenHealthFX's best advice is to talk to your mother about this again. Do it at a quiet time and not in the heat of an argument. Explain to her your reasons why you want to start shaving. You can even print out some instructions on shaving from our question "How To's - Shaving And Bumps". This may show her that you are willing to take responsibility and do it right.
