Stretch Marks And Such / Question
Published: February 23, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm an 18-year-old male that has stretch marks on many places of my body. Every time try to get close to someone, I feel self-conscious. I can't be in a relationship and care about someone before I like myself and my body. The stretch marks are so ugly, that I don't even like to change in front of my male friends. Is there anything I can do to make them go away? I heard that creams and lotions don't usually work. Do cosmetic surgeries work? And how much do they cost? Thanks for your help.

Dear Stretch Mark Problem,
Skin stretched during rapid weight gain can develop striae or stretch marks. This can frequently occur in puberty from normal development. The exact cause is unknown but it is believed to be a breakdown of elastin fibers in the tissue under the skin. If your stretch marks did not occur in association with rapid weight gain you should consult a physician. There are some medical disorders that can cause stretch marks, which need to be treated.
Unfortunately stretch marks cannot be completely eliminated. Many magical treatments have been promoted claiming to remove stretch marks, but the results have not been all that positive. Laser techniques may improve the appearance of stretch marks but the stretch marks themselves will remain. You would have to consult with a qualified physician to find out what costs are involved.
TeenHealthFX is concerned that the stretch marks seem to be having such a negative affect on your self-esteem. It is important to remember that no one has a perfect body and people will care about you no matter what imperfections you have. Most of the anxiety you are experiencing is being generated by your fear of what others will think of you. If you stop and think, you will realize you have many other good qualities that others will appreciate.
You can talk to your doctor about your concerns. Also, if you live in northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment. If you still feel very self-conscious, you may benefit from speaking to a counselor about your concerns.
