Diabetes And Blood Sugar Issues / Question
Published: June 4, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

What can high blood sugar levels be related to other than diabetes? I suffer a lot from digestive problems.

Signed: High Blood Sugar Issues

Dear High Blood Sugar Issues,

Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is most often a sign of diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas either does not produce any insulin, enough insulin, or the body is not responding to insulin. This makes it difficult for sugar to enter the cells, so a build-up of sugar in the bloodstream causes symptoms and high blood sugar levels.

You mentioned that you suffered from many digestive problems and was wondering if high blood sugar could be related to something other than diabetes. You really need to discuss this with your doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Digestive problems can include many symptoms and can be caused by many different problems, some more serious than others. Addressing your digestive problems sooner rather than later may save you a lot of pain and discomfort. You may want to begin by keeping a journal of your symptoms, bowel movements, and your diet. The doctor may use this information to assist him/her in determining the severity of the problem.

Again, TeenHealthFX recommends that you speak to your doctor and bring any questions you may have up to him/her.
