Not Satisfied With Being Single / Question
Published: March 4, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 17 and have never had a girlfriend. I have never asked anyone out on a date. Is it too late? How can I be more confident and have relationships? Thanks.

Dear 17 And Never Had A Date,

TeenHealthFX wants to start by letting you know that there is nothing wrong with you and it is not "too late"! There is absolutely no timeline for dating. Some choose to date sooner, while others prefer to wait.

You sound like you want to date, but are lacking the confidence to approach another person. Here are some thoughts which might be helpful to you with all of this: First, remember that girls are just as nervous to talk to you as you are to talk to them. Yes, it is nerve-racking for girls, too! Second, keep in mind that girls enjoy talking about a lot to of the same things you do, like movies, music, friends, and even sports. Just try to relax and enjoy the conversation. Also, remember to make eye contact, to smile and then say, "Hey, I really like talking to you."

TeenHealthFX knows approaching girls can be difficult, even scary; you just have to take a chance. If you are just too shy to imagine doing this alone, try it in a casual, co-ed group, like the lunch line or school-sponsored event. This may help pave the way to approaching new female friends, as well as that special girl, one-on-one.
