ME & Relationships / Question
Published: July 23, 2008

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am an 11 year old boy living in Georgia. I recently went on a church retreat with my church. While I was on it, I met a girl. I had a MAJOR crush on her and I still do. At the time, she had a BF. I got my friend to ask her if she liked me. She said she wanted to get to know me better. On the way home, she met a guy on the retreat sitting in front of her. They talked all the way home, which was about 4 hours. She then decided she would brake up with her boyfriend and date this guy. weeks later, I still have major feelings for her. The worst part is, the guy she decided to go out with is my best friend, who knows I like her. How do I get over her? How do I forgive my best friend? Please help!!!!! Signed, a depressed dude.

Dear How To Get Over My Crush And Forgive My Best Friend,

TeenHealthFX appreciates that you really like this girl and fully understands the pain of knowing she is dating your best friend. FX recommends that the first thing you do is to talk to your best friend about this. Explain to him how much you like this girl and ask him why he chose to ask her out when he knew that you had a crush on her.  Hopefully he likes this girl as much as you do because this will make it much easier for you to forgive him. Once your curiosity is satisfied you should be able to think more clearly about the situation. FX hopes you will choose to remain friends with him, especially as he is your best friend. Try to keep in perspective that you are only eleven years old and that there will be plenty more girls to meet and time for girlfriends.

As to getting over this girl—time is the only true remedy. Also try to avoid being together with your best friend and your crush—this will probably only spark your anger at your best friend and increase your jealousy. If she lives farther away and they have a long distance relationship then you’re lucky—getting over her will be that much easier. TeenHealthFX’s last piece of advice for you is to not mope around about this and to make sure you are spending plenty of time with friends and around other girls. Distract yourself with your friends and wait for another girl to catch your eye—remember it only took Romeo a day to get over Rosalind when he meet Juliet!
