Significant Others: Girlfriends & Boyfriends / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I've been going out with my girlfriend for 5 months now. Last year before we were going out, we became really good friends. Almost best friends. We talked all of the time and hung out quite often. It was not until the beginning of school 2001 that we decided to go out. At first, the relationship was perfect. For some reason, after 3 months, I kind of lost interest. She still likes me so much, but I don't like her as much. I care about her too much to break her heart and I don't want to lose her friendship, but I don't know what to do. Please help me.

Dear Doesn't Want to Break Girlfriend's Heart,

TeenHealthFX understands that you care about and don't want to break your girlfriend's heart, but you owe it to her and yourself to break the relationship off. It is not healthy to stay in an unhappy relationship. Sometimes people stay in these types of relationships because they are used to their partner, or think that the breakup will be more uncomfortable. Ultimately, this ends up causing more hurt for the both of you. The longer you wait, the less likely a friendship can be salvaged from the breakup.
