Published: November 16, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am so sick of the people who are around me. It's like I have no real friends in my life. What should I do?

Dear Seeking Real Friends,

Finding friends and maintaining relationships are hard work, but extremely important to your well being. Many times in your life you may feel tired of the people around you or bored with your situation. This is normal and is usually a temporary feeling. Do not immediately write off your old friends, but find ways to spread your horizons and meet new people.

Try and look for people that share your similar interests and goals. You may want to join an activity or club at school or in your community. This is a great way to meet new people and keep your old friends. It's important to take risks and be around other people.

Talking about friendship issues like this is helpful, too. Many schools offer peer counselors and mentoring groups that deal with these sort of issues. You may also make a few friends doing it.

Sometimes people without close friends are also depressed. If you think that these symptoms may apply to you, please consult your doctor.

If you get to the point that you are seriously considering suicide or are afraid of your impulses then you need to seek help immediately. You can call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room. In northern New Jersey you can also call the crisis hotline from Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Outside this area call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline, 1-800-999-9999, 24 hours, 7 days a week
