Dealing With Divorce, Step-Parents and Step-Siblings / Question
Published: November 12, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm worried about my parents. I think they're going to get a divorce. I know many of my friends live with just one parent but I don't want to have to choose between them. I don't think they know that I've heard them talking. Should I let them know or act surprised?

Dear My Parent's Possible Divorce,

The decision whether or not to talk to your parents about their possible divorce is a difficult one. However, it may be easier for you and your parents if you do talk with them about it. Sometimes just the fear of not knowing where you stand in all of this can make you feel very confused. You can discuss your concerns of having to choose between them as well as other fears you may have such as, living with one parent over the other and a change of lifestyle

Keep in mind these ideas if your parents are going through a divorce:

  1. It's not your fault.
  2. Even though they may argue or not get along with each other, it is likely that both still care for you.
  3. Be honest with yourself and your parents.
  4. Talk to a friend about your fears and concerns.
  5. Over time the situation will get better.

While divorce is never an enjoyable experience, usually with time it will get easier. If you feel like you need help sorting it all out, talk to a trusted adult, such as a teacher or a guidance counselor.
