Not Satisfied With Being Single / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

: I'm a 16-year old female and everybody always tells me how pretty I am. The only problem is that most guys obviously don't think so because I have never (and I mean NEVER) had a boyfriend and I want one really bad, but don't want to ask any guys out because I'm shy. What am I doing wrong?!

Dear Never Had A Boyfriend, Really Want One,

TeenHealthFX wants to remind you that there is absolutely no timeline for dating. Some choose to date sooner, while others prefer to wait. So, just because you have not yet had a boyfriend that does not automatically mean that you are doing something wrong.

Since you stated wanting to date, but are having trouble because you are shy, let us see if some of these ideas will help. First, remember that guys are just as nervous to talk to you, as you are to talk to them. Yes, that is right, it is nerve-racking for them too! Second, keep in mind that guys enjoy talking about a lot of the same things girls do - like movies, music, school and other friends. Just try to relax and enjoy the conversation. Also, remember - eye contact and smiling are always a plus - then say, "Hey, I really like talking to you."

TeenHealthFX knows approaching a guy can be difficult, even scary; you just have to take a chance. If you just feel too uncomfortable doing this alone, try it in a casual, co-ed group, like in the lunch line or at a school event. This may help pave the way to approaching that special guy, one-on-one. Good Luck and remember, try to relax!
