Females: Pain/Burning During Or After Penetration / Question
Published: April 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend fingered me and now my vagina hurts and I am bleeding quite a bit. It is not my period because I had it last week. Could it be because my hymen is broken or is it more serious?

Dear Fingering + Pain + Bleeding',

When the hymen is separated, during first intercourse or from some other form of penetration, there may be some slight bleeding and a little pain. Both the bleeding and the pain are quite normal and both usually stop after a short time.

If a woman was penetrated with fingers then there is the possibility that her partner's fingernails may have scraped the vaginal wall. If this is the case it is possible to develop an infection if the condition is not treated.

TeenHealthFX strongly encourages you to be examined by a doctor since you have been experiencing pain and bleeding "quite a bit." He/she will be able to evaluate the situation and let you know if any treatment is needed. In any case you'll feel much better once you know what is going on.

Please make sure that you see a doctor or go to a teen health clinic or local Planned Parenthood. If you live in Northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. You can be seen at a teen health center without your parent's permission and on a low/no cost basis.
