Penis Size / Question
Published: April 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I recently lost my girlfriend's virginity. She didn't bleed or I didn't "pop her cherry". Is that because my penis is only about four inches?

Dear Penis Size 4 Inches - She Didn't Bleed,

First off, TeenHealthFX would like to reassure you that your penis size is perfectly normal. Please refer to Penis Size for more information, but in summary, the average teen penis is between 2 - 5 inches when erect.

Secondly, we would like to explain what happens when a girl loses her virginity, or " has her cherry popped".  This refers to the stretching or tearing of a ring of tissue that surrounds the opening of the vagina called the hymen. Hymens can be stretched or torn during the first experience of sexual penetration causing a small amount of bleeding and sometimes pain, but not all normal girls experience this. Some girls may be virgins but have torn hymens as a result of tampon use, trauma, or physical exertion such as horseback riding. So even if a girl who is a virgin has vaginal sex for the first time, she may not experience pain or bleeding at all - this may be perfectly normal for the reasons mentioned.

Finally, TeenHealthFX would like to stress that you practice safer sex by using condoms each time you have sex (especially with a virgin) and that you and your partner discuss and use suitable methods of birth control. Please see these sites for more information. You may also want to refer to First Time - Doesl It Hurt and What Will Sex Be Like The First Time for more information.
