Vaginal Discharge, Infections, & Odors and Douching / Question
Published: May 2, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am having a smelly discharge in my panties and I have gone to the gynecologist, and they said it was normal. I don't know what to do. It smells horrible like it is unclean. What should I do? I am afraid to have sex with my boyfriend. What will he think?

Dear Smelly Discharge - What Will My Boyfriend Think?,

Though your vaginal odor may seem offensive to you, most normal discharge is healthy. As long as you clean the area with warm water and mild soap daily, you have nothing to feel unclean about. Do not douche though, please see our response to "Confused About Douching".

There is no need to feel self-conscious or concerned about a mild vaginal odor, especially if you have consulted your doctor about it. All women have one. If your partner makes you feel awkward or bad about it, you can refer him to our website to let him know that this normal. Your partner should be accepting of all of your many attributes. You will probably find though that your boyfriend will not mind at all!

All this said, if your discharge becomes abnormal (foul smelling, discolored or a great amount) then you need to be re-checked by a gynecologist. Look at TeenHealthFX's response to "Vaginal Discharge - How Long Does It Last?".

Since you mentioned that you are may be becoming sexually active with your boyfriend, you should also talk to your gynecologist about this. It is important to discuss safer sex methods and to always use a condom to protect against both STDs and pregnancy. If you do not feel comfortable talking to your own gynecologist about this a teen health center can see you for sexuality transmitted disease prevention and treatment and/or birth control issues without your parent's consent and on a low/no cost basis. In Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6175. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
