Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: May 23, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 16 years old I have a rash on my penis. I have only masturbated, but I am on the verge of my first sexual experience. The rash causes no pain, no problems, only visually. It is many pimples all over the glands and shaft. I am quite embarrassed and seeing a doctor does not seem feasible as it is far from my culture to talk about these issues.

Dear Cultural Issues With Penis Rash,

TeenHealthFX understands that sex is a topic that is not spoken about in many cultures. We understand and respect the cultural issue, but you need to deal with this medical issue, as there is more then one person at stake here. If you are on the verge of having your first sexual encounter then you owe it to yourself and your partner to make sure that the rash on your penis in not contagious.

Writing to TeenHealthFX was a good first start. It shows that you are responsible and a recognition that you should do something. Many doctors are aware that different cultures have different approaches to sexuality. These doctors are sensitive to the needs of their patients and do their best to put the person at ease.

You should be aware that all your medical information would be kept strictly confidential. If you are worried about your parent's reaction, you can be seen at a local teen health center or Planned Parenthood without parental permission and for an affordable cost. If you live in northern New Jersey you could make an appointment with the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health by calling 973.971.6475. While there they can also advise you about birth control methods and how to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) by practicing safer sex.
