Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: May 23, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I was wondering if a varicocele that is easily visible, but still asymptomatic, can be cured by just using more scrotal support, such as an athletic supporter or tighter fitting underwear, and not surgery. Also, if it can be cured, how long should it take before there are visible signs of improvement? Thank you for your time.

Dear More Varicocele's,
TeenHealthFX thinks your best bet is to talk to your doctor or urologist about some of your questions. Because TeenHealthFX has answered a very similar question to yours, please see Varicocele.
Here is some general information:
Varicocele is a swelling of the scrotal sac due to varicose (enlarged) veins. These varicose veins are the result of the blood backing up in the veins leading from the testicles, which causes the swelling. This is more common on the left side and is usually painless. The sack above the testicles tends to feel like a bag of worms. If there is a slight uncomfortable feeling, sometimes it can be relieved by lying down or wearing a scrotal support like tighter underwear or an athletic supporter. If there is any kind of nagging pain, you should really speak to your doctor. Again, FX thinks it is a good idea to ask your doctor some of your questions.
