Breasts & Nipples: Health Questions & Concerns / Question
Published: June 11, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been on Ortho Tri-Cyclen for 2 months now. I have noticed that my breasts have increased in size, and also have become very sensitive especially on the outer sides. I am not sure if this is a side effect from birth control or whether its because they are growing. Please help.

Dear Sore Breasts & Ortho Tricyclen,

First let TeenHealthFX applaud you for practicing birth control! To answer your question- birth control pills have been known to produce various side effects. The pill is an oral form of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, and your body will change in response to the new levels within your body.

It is normal to have temporary breast swelling and changes in the shape of the breasts due to the pill. It is also common for your breast to get a little fuller and more sensitive around your period. Even if you have not taken the pill, your breasts may be sore and have swelling because they continue to develop into your late teens. The changes that you are experiencing are completely normal, but certainly take time to get use to!

If you do not feel comfortable, or you are having any other side effects while taking the pill such as nausea, pain or break through bleeding you should talk to your doctor. There are many types of birth control pills and methods available and there is a right method for everyone.  A doctor can change your pill to a different amount or concentration of hormone if the side effects are particularly bothersome.

A teen health center can see you on a low/no cost basis and without your parent?s permission. If you live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
